12th July 06
Hi folks - sorry I haven't updated the site for ages but I am back in action. A quick update for now! I am working at the Natural History Museum in London and we are currently working on a new exhibition on Antarctica. The exhibition will open next year in May 2007 at the NHM and stay here for about 9 months before it goes touring. The exhibition is a joint thing between the NHM and BAS. I'll keep you posted.
4th July 04: "Footsteps of Shackleton"
Posted by Jean Sinclair
"Come and explore remote areas at the bottom of the world, in Southern
Chile, the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic island of South Georgia."
You might like to include a link to the BSES (British Schools Exploring
Society) "Footsteps of Shackleton" expedition to Chile, the
Falklands & South Georgia, from Sept 03 to Jan 04. I'm going as Chief
Scientist. We've just held our science briefing weekend in Cambridge,
and we are concentrating on biology. There will be a specific expedition
website, but in the meantime, there is some information about BSES on www.bses.org.uk
17th June 04: Search for Endurance
Two rival expeditions are planning to search for the Endurance,
Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship which sank in the Weddell sea after
being crushed by ice in 1914.
Finding the wreck will be a challenge as the water in the Weddell is
3000m deep and sea ice covers the sea even in summer.
The first expedition is being led by David L. Mearns, the second by Jock
Wishart - both plan to begin their search in 2005.
Mearns hopes to bring back some of the ships equipment and scientific
instruments to be ehibited in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
